Potato = Typography
The typography in this book was a project with Panna Nyeste, to create a typeface inspired by potatoes! We utilized abstract patterns from potato prints to create a striking, abstract display typeface. I then created this book to showcase the typeface.
Within its pages, you'll find an anthology featuring excerpts from 'The Truth' by Terry Pratchett, where potatoes play a recurring role in the dialogues of two characters. To introduce an element of chaos and intrigue, I developed a font randomizing script. This script disrupts legibility whenever potatoes are mentioned, amplifying the presence of our bold display type. This approach mirrors the narrative, as one character, Mr. Pin, grapples with a descent into madness and clings to the belief that he will be safe in the afterlife if he has his potato.
The text is foiled, reflecting nuanced themes of Catholicism throughout the story, this also harkens back to a historical reality: once potatoes were quite literally worth their weight in gold.
For a tactile and visual experience, the book is printed on graphite-colored smooth paper. Toner ink was selected to impart a raised shine and allow for foiling on any given specific section. The book is perfect binding with a bronze wrap-around cover, matching the foiling.
This project fuses creativity, typography, and storytelling to offer a multi-sensory exploration of an unexpected source of inspiration – the humble potato.
